Pursuer:
- Someone who is chasing after someone or something
- To follow in pursuit
- Someone who is trying to achieve something
- “be hot on someone’s track/trail”
- “bear down on someone/something”
When we think about these definitions and related phrases it gives a great picture as to what it’s like to be a pursuer. Have you ever been in a situation where you have lagged behind someone and try to catch up? In that situation, you don’t generally walk slowly, take your time, or continue at the same speed that got you behind in the first place. No, you stop with the distraction, focus on the other person and do whatever you need to to catch up. Usually for me, that requires picking up my pace, my eyes focused only on that individual. In that moment, even if something else catches my attention, I ignore it because my number one goal is to catch that person.
This is how we need to be in our pursuit of God!
I have to admit that most of my day/life is filled with distractions, filled with things that cause me to lag behind where God is and where he wants me to be.
What would your day look like, what would my day look like if we were to chase after God, be in hot pursuit of him, bearing down on him staying on his track? Would you do anything differently? Lets take a pause and really put some thought into that.
Would you do anything differently?
If you can say, “no I wouldn’t” good for you, you have achieved what we as Christ followers should be chasing after. If you are like me and say, “yes, I would do some things differently” then lets dive deeper into this question.
An idea that I thought of is to start your day with a question. What do you have for me today Lord and really listen to the Holy Spirit speaking. This doesn’t have to change what you do during the day, it should however, affect how you show up.
For example, the majority of us have a list of things that need to get done in our day. Sometimes my day looks like this; I get up in the morning, do my Bible study with my coffee, do a workout, have breakfast, shower and get ready. Then I pack my lunch and off I go to work. Upon returning I have to put everything away and get dinner going while cleaning up around the house. Once dinner and cleanup is done, my husband and I go outside and work on the property. At dark we come inside shower and get ready for bed. None of that needs to change unless I feel like he is giving me different instructions for the day! What if, in the pursuit of God I show up to all my activities how he would show up?
Maybe instead of having an attitude with the people on the road as I drive I started praying for those drivers? Instead of getting frustrated with the tasks and/or people at work I do everything as unto the glory of God and I love my neighbor as myself. These are some ways that we can be actively pursuing God and doing life. As a matter of fact, I believe that is how he would like us to be, he gave us instruction to go into all the world and preach the gospel!
It can be something as simple as striking up a conversation with the cashier in the checkout line, asking the wait-staff how you could pray for them, giving people a smile as you walk by them, really listening when someone is talking to you so that they feel the love of Christ from you.
Living for Jesus doesn’t have to be complicated but it does have to be active. We have to be actively in pursuit of him, of being the Proverbs 31 women God has destined us to be!
Challenge:
What can you change today that will help get you into the race of pursuing Jesus? Choose one thing and go for it!
I would love to hear what you chose and how it went!
